November 2011

Dear Parents,

The season has started off well and the classes are settling down to the normal routine!
A few reminders: in order to progress in English it is important for the children to read, read, read. I ask that they read every day 10-15 minutes for the pre-school to 3rd grade and 20 minutes or more for the older kids. I ask that they bring their books with them each week to show and give a mini report. The idea is to actually read the book and not just bring a book to class each week. If you have any questions don’t hesitate to ask.

I ask that they come to class ready for lessons with their pencils, etc. If they take their writing books home, I expect them to bring them back each week!
Also, if they are going to be absent, I would like an sms or email from the parents. This is for the child’s safety so we all know where they are at all times. If a child is going to miss a class for other reasons than illness then a homework assignment can be given. For example, on a trip, a day to day diary would be fun or an age appropriate report. Please ask and I will give an assignment.

It’s also important to remember that some schools don’t allow outside shoes inside the school. This means everyone. Those schools, Ruusutorppa, Tähtinniitty for example, have large signs on all the doors and plastic shoe covers for those who do not wish to remove their shoes. I prefer the children take the shoes off because it gets too warm to have them on, covered with plastic, for 90 minutes. Parents may wear the covers when walking to class.

Sometimes children have come to the schools before lessons start and can be found running around the school. This has created problems! The children need to understand that the same rules apply to other schools as to their own. So, if you drop your kids off early make sure they stay outside until lessons start or if they come into the school, they sit quietly waiting, maybe reading their book.

From time to time, I post things on www.kotikieli.com so it’s worth having a look sometimes to see if there is any information that might be useful to you. I know it’s been down for some time but it should be in working order by now.

You can always send an email or call for any reason. Cynde

It's registration time of year again!

Registration forms are being passed out this week  (9) and need to be filled out and returned next week (10) in order to secure a place in the lessons for next year. This way the schedules and times will hopefully be known before leaving school this year in May.

Please find the application form in your child’s bag or email me for a new one:  cynde.sadler@espoo.opit.fi

Application forms can be found at www.espoo.fi Espoonpalvelut ->Asiointi ja neuvonta-> Lomakkeet ->Opetus ja koulutus->Ilmoittautuminen maahanmuutajien äidinkielen opetuksen
